AI agent vs website chatbot for dealerships

Both answer shoppers on your website. Only one keeps working after the shopper leaves the page. Here is how they differ, and when a simple chatbot is enough.

Last reviewed: By the QualiFlow AI team

The short answer

A website chatbot lives in a chat window on your site. It answers common questions from a script or a general AI model and collects contact details, then usually stops when the visitor leaves. An AI agent works across channels such as text, email, chat and calls, answers from your real inventory and calendar, takes actions like booking a test drive, follows up later, and hands the customer to a person with context.

If you only need to answer opening-hours questions and capture a name, a chatbot can be enough. If you want leads answered and followed up wherever they write, at any hour, you are looking for an agent, and you should check how it is stopped from making things up.

Disclosure: QualiFlow AI makes an AI agent for dealerships, so we are not a neutral party. We describe each option by how it works, not by vendor, and we say where QualiFlow is not the right fit.

The made-up answer problem

A general AI model will happily agree to things it has no authority to promise.

In a 2023 incident recorded by the AI Incident Database (opens in a new tab), visitors persuaded a dealership's website chatbot to agree to sell a new SUV for one dollar. No car changed hands, but it showed what happens when a chat tool can say anything and nothing checks it.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Where do prices, stock and policies in a reply come from, and what happens when the record is missing?
  • Is each reply checked before it is sent, or only the instructions given to the AI?
  • Can it say an appointment is booked before the booking actually succeeds?
  • What does it say about discounts, payments and finance?
  • How does a customer reach a person, and who is told?

How QualiFlow handles it

Aria, QualiFlow's AI agent, answers from your records and approved knowledge. Every reply is checked against your dealership's records before it is sent, and Aria may only say something was booked or recorded when the server holds a receipt for it. Discount and finance questions go to your team. See Security & trust for the details.

When each fits

Which one fits your store

  • A website chatbot fits when…

    • most questions are hours, directions and simple FAQs
    • a person monitors chats and replies quickly
    • you don't need follow-up by text or email
  • An AI agent fits when…

    • leads arrive on several channels and at all hours
    • you want answers from live inventory and real booking
    • follow-up after the first chat matters to you
    • you have a person ready to take hand-offs

Honest trade-offs

When QualiFlow is not the right choice

QualiFlow AI is probably not your best option if:

  • You only want a chat window on your website, with no texting, email or follow-up.
  • You want human agents to staff your website chat; QualiFlow's chat is answered by Aria and your own team.
  • You need a ready-made two-way sync with your CRM or DMS today. QualiFlow brings contacts and inventory in by CSV.
  • You want published customer results, reviews or a security certification such as SOC 2 before you buy. QualiFlow has none yet.
  • You sell outside the United States, or need customer languages beyond English, Spanish and French.

FAQ

Questions about AI agents and chatbots

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers in one chat window, usually from a script or general AI model. An AI agent works across channels, reads your real records, takes actions such as booking an appointment, follows up later and hands off to a person with context.

Can a dealership chatbot quote prices?

Only if it reads them from your inventory. A chatbot running on a general AI model can invent prices or agree to deals it has no authority to make, which is why replies should be checked against your records before they are sent.

Do I need both a chatbot and an AI agent?

Usually not. An AI agent with a website chat widget covers what a chatbot does, plus the other channels and follow-up. Keep a chatbot only if it does something specific your agent doesn't.

Will customers know they are talking to AI?

They should. QualiFlow presents Aria openly as an AI agent, and customers can ask for a person at any time.
